This is a really frustrating issue! What happens is that your Dell monitor is not recognized and you can only see your other screens in the Display Preferences on Mac OS X.
The trick is simple and not obvious.
Hold the option key, and then a button called “Gather Windows” changes to “Detect Displays”.
